How much does it cost to move a couch?

Updated October 4, 2026 · 4 minute read

A couch is the most common single item people pay someone else to move, and the price you’ll pay depends almost entirely on which of three ways you choose to move it. Here are the real ranges, and where each option stops making sense.

Option 1: rent a truck yourself — $20 to $90

A local day rental on a cargo van or small pickup typically runs $20–$50 plus fuel; a 10-foot box truck lands closer to $30–$90 once mileage fees are in. If you and a friend already lift things for fun, this is the cheap route. What the sticker price doesn’t include: a second pair of hands, the sore back, and the small odds of a gouged doorframe you pay for in apology instead of dollars. This option loses fast if nobody can help you lift — a couch is awkward alone.

Option 2: full-service movers — $150 to $400

For a single large item across town, moving companies commonly quote $150–$400, more if there are stairs or a long carry. You get insurance, equipment, and people who do this every day. What you’re also getting is a crew sized for a three-bedroom house arriving for one sofa, and many companies have minimum hours that make a one-item job the most expensive kind you can book. For a couch alone, you’re paying for capacity you don’t need.

Option 3: a neighbor with a truck — often $40 to $100

The middle path is someone local who already owns a pickup or trailer and doesn’t mind earning a bit from it. On Haul&Handy the helper sets their own price before anyone lifts a box, and you pay it plus a 10% service fee (rounded up to the whole dollar) once you’ve confirmed the job went through. You’re hiring someone for exactly one item, not a crew.

The honest trade-off: a marketplace of neighbors has fewer guarantees than a licensed moving company — no crews on standby, and today, fewer helpers than we’d like while we’re new. If you need certainty about timing, a moving company is still the right call.

Which one is yours?

If the couch is light, the route is short, and you have a friend’s pickup, rent the truck. If it’s a family heirloom going down a spiral staircase, pay the professionals. If it’s most everything in between — one awkward item, a fair price, someone from a few streets over — that’s the job we built.
